History
The idea of building a Latino coalition of organizations has been the dream of many leaders in the state. During the last seven years alone Latinos tried to organize statewide coalitions in three opportunities. Motivated by the same goal and by the request of community groups, the Latino Community Development Center (LCDC) provided seed money in 2002 to start the organizing effort.
LCDC’s staff provided grassroots organizations with technical assistance as the backbone of the organizing effort. The first two years focused on developing relationships among organizations, providing technical assistance to groups, quietly organizing opportunities for groups to build relationships, share their work and learn from each other.
With time interest and participation grew, and organizations agreed that success in coalition building would come about when members became owners of the organization and run the process entirely. The Board of Directors of LCDC agreed to support that principle. In November 2004, LCDC helped incorporate the NC Latino Coalition as a nonprofit organization.
