Statewide Latino Convocation
A Huge Success
The North Carolina Latino Coalition Delegates Assembly on October 15, 2006 exceeded expectations both with respect to turnout and impact. Almost one thousand leaders representing over 70 Latino organizations jammed the Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston Salem.
Public business included reports from the Secretary of de NC Department of Health and Human Services on the progress made on implementing Title VI regulations; and the Chief of Agricultural Health and Safety from the Department of Labor regarding inspections of farmworkers labor camps. Additionally candidates for Congress reported on their views on several issues impacting immigrant families in north Carolina.
Perhaps the most impressive part of the meeting was the ceremony that ratified the mutual commitment between the NC Latino Coalition, the Industrial Areas Foundation in North Carolina, several labor unions and top religious leaders including the Catholic and the Episcopal Bishops.
The theme of the event, North Carolina Latinos: We are not alone, which focused on real solutions to real problems impacting Latino families, resonated deeply. NC Latino Coalition leaders called for an end to the political posturing, scapegoat and polarizing, which currently characterizes so much of the immigration debate.
The main outcomes of the action included:
- Public commitments from Catholic, Episcopalian and NC Council of Churches to join the NC Latino Coalition in defending the rights of immigrants in North Carolina.
- Public commitment from NC AFL-CIO, SEIU, UNITE HERE and UFCW labor groups to support immigrants and their struggle for better a life.
- Public commitment from North Carolina Industrial Areas Foundation to join forces with the NC Latino Coalition.
- Commitment from Congressmen Mel Watt, David Price, and Brad Miller to meet with leaders of the NC Latino Coalition in their districts
Commitment from SEIU International Union to support civic engagement campaign in North Carolina.
- Report from Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services on strategy to address the quality and quantity of interpreters at health care institutions throughout the state.
- Commitment fro Congressmen Mel Watt to continue supporting the issue of comprehensive and humane immigration reform.
- Unanimous commitment from all of those in attendance to support immigrant and non immigrant workers at the UFCW's Smithfield Campaign.
- Collective commitment to non-partisan civic participation planning involving immigrant communities across the state.
